Donnington Recreation Ground Playground Update

17 April 2010 - the Playground Opens

Opening4.jpgThe new play area opened today under glorious sunny skies. There was an excellent turn out and we were honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Newbury, Councillor Kuldip Singh Kang. An introductory speech was delivered by Councillor John Edwards, the Chairman of Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council.

The week before the opening saw some final touches - paintwork was touched up, more turf laid and the playground sign erected.

The installation of the equipment on the new play area is now complete and the playground is in general use. The contractors will return to flatten ruts, sow seed and touch up the paintwork. The playground will be officially opened on Saturday April 17 at 11am.

The playground has attracted many appreciative and complimentary comments. It was very busy yesterday (Sunday), and one parent reported queues to use the equipment!

We do rely on people using the recreation ground generally to tidy up after themselves and their pets - please use the litter bins and dog waste bins provided, or take rubbish home with you. Thank you!

11th March 2010

The contractors have continued to make progress on the playground.

The yo-yo swing and the mizzenmast have been installed, completing the equipment. The mound next to the swing has taken shape, and will be turfed. The gap in the fence behind the mound will be fenced and eventually hedged.

The rubber safety matting is designed so that grass will grow through it and eventually cover it - the grass can then be mown just like the rest of the field.

19th February 2010 - More Equipment Arriving

Despite the wet weather this week, our contractors have been working hard to make sure that progress continues on the new play area.

  • The mound for the slide has taken better shape, and the slide has been put in place.
  • The pillars for the cableway have been cemented in.
  •  The fencing for the youngsters' area should be put in place this weekend.

12th February 2010 - the Playground begins to Take Shape

The new play area is beginning to take shape, with some of the equipment, including the swings, zig zag twister, springie and whirly bird now in place.

We expect the cableway to be delivered and installed next week.

Contractors Arrive 28th January

The contractors for the play area arrived on site on Thursday 28th January to begin marking out the site and unloading equipment.

Over the next few days, the existing equipment will be removed and ground work will begin for the new equipment.

New Play Area for Donnington Recreation Ground

Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council has won funding from the DCSF Playbuilder scheme for a new playground on Donnington recreation ground. Our chosen supplier for this important project is Wicksteed Playscapes - click here to visit their website.

The existing old play equipment is to be removed and a totally new, modern playground installed to cater for a range of ages from toddlers up to 14.

The play area for the youngest children will be fenced and will include swings, a whirly bird, a 4-way springie (see-saw) and bench seats for parents. Equipment for older children includes swings, a mound slide, a cableway, a climber and a yo-yo swing. Safety surfaces will be made of rubber matting which allows the grass to grow through. The recent weather has caused some uncertainty over timings. However, work is due to start on-site at the end of January and completion is expected in late February or March 2010.
