Why it’s hot Newbury’s £250m facelift has been an object lesson in tasteful understatement. With a nip here and a tuck there — a spruced-up market square and a new shopping enclave — the result is a classy makeover for the historic West Berkshire town. There’s a cluster of restaurants on the square, all with tables outside in summer, leading to a splendid bridge over the River Kennet, from which you can see pubs, barges and the broad, pedestrianised main shopping street.
