Celebrate the beautiful North Wessex Downs during our very first Walking Festival!  With 14 guided walks across the region – from Avebury in Wiltshire to Goring in Oxfordshire – the festival is a perfect opportunity to get outside, explore more and take in the stunning views this landscape has to offer, all in the expert care of our walk leaders.

Our walks range from a pushchair-friendly stroll around the lovely lanes of Huish in the Pewsey Vale to an all-day guided hike onto the downs from Goring. We have a superb navigation skills workshop starting at Avebury and several wildlife walks to choose from.

Our Walks


Saturday, 8th June 2019 9.30am
A ‘Venerable’ Nordic Walk from Blewbury.  Hike up onto the Downs with Philippa, of Pipsticks Walks, who will share her extensive knowledge of the flora, fauna and historic landscape along the route.

11 miles (6 hours). Strenuous. Pay on day – £8


Sunday, 9th June 2019 10.30am
Facca’s Valley: The woods, hills & valleys of the Faccombe Estate.  Walk through beautiful rolling hills and valleys with an abundance of wildlife, wildflowers and views.  Guided by Walkers are Welcome Whitchurch.
3 miles (2 hours). Moderate. Free


Monday, 10th June 2019 10.00am
Navigation Skills Workshop from Avebury.  A fantastic opportunity to improve your navigation skills and techniques when planning and walking.  With expert tuition from Dorian, a qualified mountain leader, from Trigpoint Adventures.
10 miles (5.5 hours). Moderate. £8.50


Tuesday, 11th June 2019 10.00am
A Guided Walk from Goring.  Discover giants and walk in the ancient footsteps of wayfarers and poets with Philippa of Pipsticks Walks, as she shares her extensive knowledge of this area – its wildlife and history.
12 miles (7 hours). Strenuous. £5.50


Wednesday, 12th June 2019 10.00am
The Setting of Ashdown House.  Take in the magnificent setting of the house in a little valley just north of Lambourn.  Led by the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust.

Wednesday, 12th June 2019 5.00pm
An Early Evening Stroll from Huish.  A family-friendly accessible wander through lovely lanes with various start points depending how far you want to walk. Exploring local history and landscape.
Up to 3 miles (1 hour). Easy. Free


Thursday, 13th June 2019 2.00pm
Discovering Aston Tirrold’s History & Wildlife.  Explore the history and wildlife around the delightful little village of Aston Tirrold with knowledgeable guides from the AONB team and the Aston Local History Group.
3 miles (2 hours). Easy. Free


Friday,14th June 2019 10.30am
Bedwyn Brail, Wilton & Crofton: A rail-friendly walk. 
A tranquil walk through Bedwyn’s local history, woodland and landscape with Judy from Bedwyn Footpaths Group.  Come by train and make a day of it!
5 miles (2.5 – 3 hours). Easy. £2.00


Saturday, 15th June 2019 2.00pm
A Social Saturday Hike on the Pewsey Downs.   A fun walk taking in the Alton Barnes White Horse, the Wansdyke & the highest point in Wiltshire. Optional FREE Nordic walking taster session available beforehand with Wessex Nordic Walking.
6 miles (2 hours). Moderate. £9.00

Letcombe Brook Wildlife Walk.   A family-friendly wildlife walk along the route of the brook starting in Wantage.  With Mark from the Letcombe Brook Project.

Wednesday, 19th June 2019 7.00pm
Exploring Freeman’s Marsh in Hungerford. 
 Investigate the plants and creatures of this beautiful green space and try river-dipping in the wildlife-rich chalk stream. With walk leaders from the Town & Manor of Hungerford.

Thursday, 20th June 2019 10.30am
Big Skies & Hidden Valleys: The Manors of Vernham Dean.  
Walk up onto the roof of this hidden and tranquil corner of the Downs on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.  Led by Walkers are Welcome Whitchurch
4 ½ miles (up to 2 ½ hours). Moderate. Free


Friday, 21st June 2019 10.00am
A Wildlife Walk Around Stonebridge Wild River Reserve with ARK.  Investigate this award-winning reserve with Action for River Kennet’s project officer, Anna Forbes.  As seen on BBC’s Britain in Bloom programme!
1 mile (2 hours). Easy. £5.00


Sunday, 23rd June 2019 10.00am
One Lump or Two: Ladle Hill and Beacon Hill. Choose
to do one or both of these “aller et retour” routes near Highclere.  Country paths and continuous climbs which, given clear weather, will be rewarded with fantastic views.  Led by walk leaders from Whtichurch Walking for Health.
5 miles minimum (2 ¼ hours min). Moderate/Strenuous. Free
